We love sharing intriguing patient cases in our practice through our Derm Diaries platform. One such case involves a healthy man in his 40s who presented with a persistent dark patch on the left side of his back, accompanied by intense itching he couldn’t resist scratching.
We diagnosed him with Notalgia Paresthetica, a chronic condition characterized by itching or burning on the upper back, often caused by nerve compression or irritation from spinal changes or postural strain. While benign, its symptoms can mimic conditions like eczema, tinea versicolor, or even cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, a rare but serious diagnosis.
After a thorough evaluation, we started him on a personalized treatment plan, including topical creams for itch relief and physical therapy to address underlying nerve compression. With time and care, he’s well on his way to finding relief and healing. At Dermatology Solutions, we’re here to guide you every step of the way!
