Skin Infections

A skin infection is a condition that is caused by an outside organism such as a bacterium, fungus, virus, or even mites/insects. After an interaction with such an organism, the immune system incites an inflammatory response. A skin infection is more likely to happen when exposed to a virulent organism, the skin breaks, a wound is contaminated, a person has a superficial skin disease, and a person is immunocompromised.

How do I prevent an infection?

  • Avoid injury if possible
  • Protect any existing injuries
  • Wash hands often and maintain a clean environment
  • Actively treat any skin diseases

What is the treatment?

The treatment for a skin infection is based on what the skin has been infected by.
  • Topical medications: Topical antifungal, antiprotozoal, or antibacterial creams or ointments can be prescribed to help treat infections.
  • Oral medications: Oral antifungals, antiprotozoals, antibiotics, or antivirals can be prescribed to treat the appropriate infection.
