Poison ivy is a plant that causes an itchy rash. A person can get poison ivy if they directly touch the poison ivy plant, touch something that has gotten poison ivy oils on it, or are nearby when a poison ivy plant is burned. Poison ivy has a characteristic appearance of three leaves. It is important to be careful around suspected poison ivy plants because even dead plants can cause the rash.
The rash caused by poison ivy should go away on its own in 1-3 weeks. However, the rash can be very itchy and form painful blisters before it resolves.
What is the treatment?
Topical medications: Your dermatologist can prescribe topical steroids to treat the rash and reduce symptoms of itch.
Oral medications: If the rash is severe, your dermatologist can prescribe a course of oral steroids to reduce the inflammation and itching from the rash. If necessary, your dermatologist can also prescribe higher strength antihistamines to help relieve the itch.
Skin Care:
Avoid scratching
Use cold cloths
Use calamine lotion
Avoid antibiotic ointments and antihistamine creams
Wear protective clothing and gloves when outside
