If you’ve noticed thickened, yellow, or brittle toenails, you’re not alone. Toenail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, affects up to 10% of the population and is even more common in older adults and individuals with diabetes.

Risk Factors and Causes

Toenail fungus is often caused by dermatophyte infections and can result from walking barefoot in communal showers or locker rooms, trauma to the nail, wearing non-breathable shoes, or visiting nail salons that don’t properly sterilize their instruments. People with diabetes or circulation issues are at even higher risk.

When left untreated, the infection can spread to other areas of the body, causing ringworm (tinea corporis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and a unique fungal rash pattern known as “one hand, two feet” syndrome.

Patient Story: Clearer Nails with Pulse Dosing

This patient came to us with discolored, thickened, and brittle toenails—classic signs of fungal infection. We chose an oral antifungal treatment using pulse dosing, which involves taking medication in short bursts rather than daily for several months. This approach improves safety, often eliminates the need for lab monitoring, and still delivers excellent clinical results.
After the oral treatment course, we transitioned to a topical antifungal to maintain the improvement and prevent recurrence.
